What part of your brain is dominant?

Posted on June 10th, 2008 | by Nick Grinberg |

I came across a test the other day that can show you which part of your brain is more dominant.

If you see the dancer spin clockwise you are ‘right’ brain dominant (creative), whereas anti-clockwise is ‘left’ brain dominant (logical).  You can even make it switch directions if you focus!

The test can be found here

Whilst I am unsure about how ’scientifically sound’ this test is - I think it could have some very useful applications.  For example, advertising can be targeted at people - based on their thoughts.

Think about a company such as Dell, running this type of test for a new laptop.  Potentially, customers could be shown an add - dependent upon their thought patterns.

Ad for left brain Ad for right brain
- Stress the technical specs of the computer
- Accentuate value
- Use colourful emotional language to focus on the ‘experience’
- Use symbology and imagery

This type of segmentation might add something to the old gender, location, income etc ways of generalizing your target market.

Even if this particular test holds no scientific validity, I think it’s a great step forward in really understanding how people think and leveraging that for improved marketing.

    lol i finally tamed her!
At first I could only get the silly naked woman to spin clockwise but now i can see both directions and change my perspective voluntarily. It helps to close you’re eyes. or look away, Personally i squint and that works for me.

The brain is very adapt at filling out perceptual gaps…
So if you don’t allow it a moment to readjust to the picture anew, It will be very hard to see it in a different light….

Heres another interesting visual trick that will highlight one of these perceptual gaps..

Did you guys know we all have an unconscious blind spot?

    do this experiment:
    1. get a blank sheet of paper and put an X in the middle of it.
    2. hold the x about 2 inches right of your left eye.
    3. Move the piece of paper away from your face looking straight ahead, and trying to keep the X in your peripheral vision
    4. If you do this about 6-12 inches away from you’re face you will notice a blind spot!

Anyways, that was kind of random!
Great post as always nick, Even though for the first 5 minutes before i first saw her spin anticlockwise for a fleeting moment I was about ready to throw my monitor out the window.

    Cheers, Dima

Thats pretty cool Nick. I’m right brain so that pretty much explains my entrepreneurial streak and lack of logic.

    Which side are you Nick?
